LANGUAGE TESTING AND
EVALUATION
THE
REPORT OF REAL TEACHING RELATED TO THE USE OF HAIA APPROACH IN TEACHING ENGLISH
AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE
(PERSONAL ESSAY)
Assessment is a variety ways
of collecting information on a learner’s language ability or achievement. In measuring how far students can get along learning process, it
is important to test the students as a
part of assessment. Assessment is a central element in curriculum design: it is the critical link
between learning outcomes, content
and learning and teaching activities. The testing and assessment usually used interchargeably,
the latter is an umbrella term encompassing measurement administered on a one
of basis of tests, qualitative methods of monitoring and recording students
learning such as observation, stimulations or project work. Actually assessment
also familiar as a part of evaluation which take a part with overall language
programme and not only with what have learn by individual learner.
The real teaching vidio was taken on Monday,
December 8, 2014 at one of private vocational high school in Bandung. The
purpose of creating this video is to show how the teacher applied the assessment in the classroom based on Holistic, Authentic,
and Integrated assessment. This vidio and report also as a purpose to the assignment of Language Testing
and Evaluation course final examination.
For some
reasons, teacher and other educational professionals spend a lot of time
testing, evaluating and assessing students. Sometimes this is to measure the
students’ abilities to see if they can enter a course or institution. Sometimes
it is to see how well they getting on. In line with this,
from the beginning of the class activity the teacher made a students’ curiosity
to graph their understanding toward with the material by describing himself physically
to them. After their motivated and get the atmosphere to learn related to the
material (here, all the student get an interactive learning), he continued with
the explanation by giving an example related to people characteristic by using
his characteristic. And then the students’ do the same in pairs, in the process
of doing these the teacher do the assess by walking around the class.
The
assessment were used in this teaching opportunities were formative assessment. Formative
assessment means the kind of feedback teachers
give to the students as a course progressing and
which, as a result, may help them to improve their performance Nunan (2001:137). Assessment is caried out to collect
information on learners’ language proficiency and achievement that can be used
by stakeholders in language learning programmes for various purposes. These
purposes included; selection, certification, accountability, diagnostic,
instructional decision-making, and motivation Nunan (2001:138).
The standard process which is applied to the latest curriculum (Curriculum
2013) is emphasis more authentic assessment (Permendikbud No. 81A 2013). It
also state that an authentic assessment is considered necessary to measure the
overall learning outcomes of students. The statement above also integrated with
the process related to the real teaching vidio when he used a pictured as a
media and games to encourage students believed in learning English especialy
for speaking skill. But, before doing an activity he devided the class into a
group to make him easier to assess students’ activity and give a chance to the
students’ who still shy in speaking become more confidence.
All of the assessments evaluate the progress of
learning, not merely the result but also the process and other aspects in
different ways (Devianti, H., Dantes, N., Mahrhaeni, A, 2014). In other words,
the assessment system would be fairer to students as learners, because every
effort which the students produce will be more appreciated. It showed when he
assess students’who give response during the process in class activities.
Another students’ also try to show their competence although their still
misspronuncing or using a wrong grammar but he keep give them a good motivation
and assessment, not judging them because it’s learning process.
Regarding the importance of ongoing learning, assessment must be
administered to the students in order to assess the competence level and to
determine the quality and the quantity of the students’s ability (Ni Putu Prasanti Devi, Anak Agung Istri Ngurah
Marhaeni, Dra. Luh Putu Artini, 2014). Thoroughly assessing the students, the teacher will be able to decide
what further action is required in the classroom for the development of
students’ competence and skill. (Nitko, 1996 cited in Ni Putu Prasanti Devi, Anak Agung Istri Ngurah Marhaeni, Dra. Luh Putu
Artini, 2014), state that
assessment in education helps teachers to make a better decision regarding
teaching the strategic acquisition of language skills.
The whole activity
he used in the class were integrated with the syllabus according to
observing, questioning, collecting information, associating and communicating. Related
to (Mulyani, 2013:19) state that assessment is conducted to evaluate
students’ results of study in which the instruments
used are based on the indicator of competency achievement and Standard of
Assessment. It can be elucidated that assessment is required to execute using rubrics
in order to evaluate students’achievement
towards indicators determined.
In the end, teaching activities and assessment in this real teaching
was conducted by holistic, authentic and integrated approach. Starting from the beginning until the end of teaching process. This
real teaching applied in the classroom to measure how HAIA approach applied and
how effective it was. The result, teaching and learning process was very
natural and it answered what our current students need in real life. Because in
teaching and learning process, the students are required to reach both
perceptive and productive skills. The teacher also assess students’ cognitive,
affective and psychomotor skill.
Some important things that need to be considered by all of English teacher were teaching and learning techniques and assessment
method and one of the way to solve teacher
problem on assessment in Indonesia is by using a Holistic,
Authentic, and Integrated Approach. New curriculum
could develop student language competence by preparing a good teaching process
and assessment that integrated with HAIA (Holistic, Authentic, and Integrated
Approach in suherdi (2012: 269). Moreover, the implementation
of KTSP curriculum or 2013 curriculum should applied in every teaching
activities and education level by using HAIA approach.
Because, by using this approach hopefully
teaching and learning process will be meaningful for the next generation. At
least, by using HAIA approach, teaching and learning process for English
subject will be something important by practicing English in their daily life.
